The only conventional means of treating celiac disease is following a gluten-free diet, which is very difficult to maintain for many patients. An Indian paper reviewed homeopathic remedies that could offer alternative therapies for this immune-based disease by strengthening the patient’s immune system.
This study was supported by the National Institute of Homeopathy. It was published in HPathy.
- Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder involving the gluten protein found in foods like barley, rye, and wheat. Gluten triggers a harsh reaction from the immune system, which eventually causes problems in the small bowel.
- Complications of celiac disease include enteropathy-associated T cell lymphoma, esophageal cancer, small bowel adenocarcinoma, and ulcerative jejunitis. Adults with the disease are much more vulnerable to developing cancerous malignancies and also suffer a twofold increase in mortality ratio, especially in patients who are more than 50 years old.
- Avoiding foods with gluten is the primary therapy for patients diagnosed with celiac disease. However, patients with non-responsive or refractory forms of the disease fail to respond to a gluten-free diet.
- Homeopathic medicines are reported to support the immune system and natural defenses of the body. They have shown some promise for treating other autoimmune disorders.
- Homeopathic therapy is individualized according to the specific symptoms of the patient. Individual remedies include Antimonium crudum, Bryonia alba, Bacillus gaertner, Butyricum acidum, Calcarea carbonica, Causticum, Croton-tig, Cinchona officinalis, Hydrastis Canadensis, Kali carbonicum, Lycopodium, Natrum uuriaticum, nitric acid, Nux vomica, Mercurius corrosivus, phosphorus, Phosphoricum acidum, Pulsatilla, sarsaparilla, Sepia officinalis, sulfur, Zincum metallicum, and Zingiber officinale.
The paper concluded that homeopathic medicines displayed some promise as potential treatments for patients with celiac disease.
