The Himalayan butterfly bush is a powerful analgesic

The Himalayan butterfly bush (Buddleja crispa) is commonly found in warm regions of South Asia, Africa, and America. This plant is known for having various medicinal applications. A group of researchers from King Saud University and Aga Khan University Medical College were able to determine that the Himalayan butterfly bush has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-platelet properties. These findings, which were published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, were based on the results of in vivo studies.

  • The Himalayan butterfly bush belongs to the Buddleja genus of plants, which are traditionally used for treating various diseases. Examples of health conditions that can be treated by Buddleja plants are stomach ulcers, wounds, and burns, as well as inflammatory and neuronal diseases.
  • Previous studies on Buddleja showed that these plants have an abundance of phytochemicals, including flavonoids, sterols, glycosides, and terpenoids. Aside from these, novel phytochemicals, such as buddlejoside and buddlejone, were also discovered in Buddleja plants.
  • For this study, the researchers evaluated the analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-platelet effects of Himalayan butterfly bush extracts using mice and rats as animal models. In addition to this, researchers also observed the animal models for potential damage caused by the extracts.

The results of the study show that Himalayan butterfly bush has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-platelet activity. It was also observed that the extracts were non-toxic to the animals. Based on these results, the researchers concluded that the Himalayan butterfly bush contains bioactive compounds, which are yet to be identified, that makes it an effective treatment for pain and inflammatory conditions.
