Treating bacterial pneumonia with Dusuqing granules

Researchers from the Henan University of Chinese Medicine have found that Dusuqing granules (DSQ) can be used to treat pneumonia caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae, a gram-negative and multidrug-resistant bacteria. The study, published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, investigated the effects of DSQ on pulmonary inflammation using an animal model for bacterial pneumonia.

  • To mimic the effects of Klebsiella pneumonia, rats were treated with an intratracheal injection.
  • The rats were then randomized into four groups, namely: control, model, DSQ-treated, and levofloxacin-treated.
  • Researchers treated the rats in the experimental group for seven days, after which they harvested lung tissue for pathological analysis, as well as interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP)-1and macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-2 detections.
  • To determine NF-kB mRNA, researchers used real-time qPCR, while western blotting assay was used to identify phosphorylation and total proteins of P38MAPK, JNK46/54, ERK42/44.
  • The results indicated a significant improvement in the rats in the DSQ group. In addition, the group exhibited notably higher levels of NF-kB mRNA expression and the phosphorylation of P38MAPK, JNK46/54, and ERK42/44 proteins.
  • The team concluded that DSQ can be used to inhibit the effects of Klebsiella pneumonia because of its ability to inactivate the NF-kB/ MAPK pathway.
