Acupressure is an effective, natural method for treating constipation

Constipation is a common health issue that is characterized by painful or infrequent bowel movements, typically less than three times a week. It can sometimes be linked to many other underlying health conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Constipation is often treated with the use of medications and laxatives, but these can often come with unintended side effects. If you want to relieve constipation without any unwanted side effects, why not try the ancient healing art of acupressure?

Age is a common risk factor for constipation, but it can occur in people of all ages. Other risk factors include a low-fiber diet, a lack of regular exercise, a change in routine, an insufficient water intake, the use of certain medications, pregnancy, and delaying the urge to have bowel movements. Constipation is also often accompanied by other symptoms, such as abdominal pain, vomiting, bloating, inflammation of the abdomen, a sense of incomplete bowel movement, and occasional diarrhea caused by an obstruction of the colon.

How acupressure can help treat constipation

The natural remedy of acupressure entails the gentle application of pressure on specific “acupoints” or key healing points in the body. This helps to stimulate the flow of “Qi” or healing energy throughout the body’s vital organs to encourage the body’s natural self-healing process. Stimulating the correct acupoints can help relax your abdomen and promote painless and regular bowel movements. Acupressure can also help to alleviate a number of the symptoms normally associated with constipation.

To effectively reap the benefits of acupressure in treating constipation, it is recommended to drink plenty of fluids and eat a healthy diet full of fiber-rich foods alongside acupressure therapy. With proper nutrition, adequate fluid intake, and exercise, acupressure can go a long way in boosting your digestion and promoting healthy bowel movements. Acupressure points to help relieve constipation

You can help alleviate constipation by stimulating these acupoints:

  • Stomach 36. This acupoint is also known as the Three Mile Point. When properly massaged, it can help relieve stomach and intestinal disorders and help strengthen the rest of your body. You can find the Three Mile Point four finger widths just below your kneecap and one finger width outside of your shinbone. To check if you’ve found the right spot, simply move your foot up and down. You should feel a muscle flexing beneath your fingers. Briskly rub this point with your palms for one minute and repeat the process on the other leg.
  • Large Intestine 4. Also known as the Joining Valley Point, you can find this spot on the fleshy muscle or webbing in between your index finger and your thumb. To massage this acupoint, simple spread your thumb and index finger far apart and squeeze the fleshy webbing with your fingertips for a whole minute. Do this while taking deep, long breaths, then repeat the process on your other hand. Stimulating this point can help relieve constipation and chronic pain. Pregnant women should avoid stimulating this acupoint as it may result in premature contractions of the uterus.
  • Large Intestine 11. This functional acupoint is also called the Crooked Pond and is a vital trigger point for your colon. You can find this point at the outer end of your elbow crease. Use your fingers to firmly press down on this point for one minute while breathing deeply. Switch hands and repeat the process on your other arm.  Stimulating this point is helpful in providing quick relief for constipation and indigestion.
